I REALLY love to bake and cook and have others enjoy my food. There are some pictures behind the cut and it'll link you to my FlickR page... this is just a sample.

You know what?
I actually forgot I belonged to this community and I only just remembered when I was going through my friends list. ;_;
But that's not the point - I'd recently made some very yummy banana bread for the people at uni and right now there's another one baking in the oven for my parent's sailing race lunch...thing.
So! for the recipe (and pictures) follow the link to my journal!

Clean-out-my-pantry recipe request

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 6:19 PM
Hello lovely bakers! I come to you today with a bit of an odd recipe request. You see, I'm moving next weekend and I'm playing that great game where you try to use up all of your pantry and refrigerator contents so that you don't have to move them ;). Every recipe that I've found that sounds good to make with what I have leaves me short an ingredient (or it's sub).

So what would you make?

I'd really prefer something not too sweet, but even if it is, I'll just pawn it off on my co-workers :). Thanks so much!

Mandarin Orange Pie

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Thanks to you guys for the Mandarin Orange recipes the other day. I'm going to go through all of them sooner or later. :D For now, here's the first one I made--Mandarin Orange Pie. The taste is really, really delicious, and especially great for the hot weather. ♥

I'm trying to make some chocolate cupcakes for a friend's birthday, but I don't have any cocoa powder, and the local shop's sold out. I have loads of chocolate though...

Would anyone know how much melted chocolate to use if a recipe calls for 5oz cocoa powder? And a way of stopping that affecting the consistency? Or even know a recipe that uses melted chocolate to begin with? (I had some cocoa yesterday, but someone used it.)

Thanks!

plaisir sucre

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 6:19 AM

Mmmm...sugar coma

I took a shot at Pierre herme's plaisir sucre this weekend, and was pretty happy with the results. After first hearing about the concept I was some what skeptical towards this pastry, (sounded a bit like taking a bite out of a solid chocolate remote) but was particularly suprised at how well the textures and flavors worked with each other.

I did make a second version of the dessert w/ only a single sheet of 60% chocolate. Although good, the original's 3 milk chocolate sheets some what overpowered the flavor/textures of the other delicate components. The second attempt worked perfectly for me.

Naturade products

  • May. 16th, 2008 at 8:07 PM
I have a nearly full container of Naturade NRG Protein Powder (Vanilla) and a nearly full container of Naturade Total Soy Original Protein Powder (Vanilla). You're supposed to use them to make shakes but the shakes are just gross. I also have another product that I'm using for shakes now so I don't need these two any more.

However, each of the containers is 32 oz. I'm wondering if I can use the powder to bake something. Perhaps something like a high protein muffin, cake, or cookie? The label on the NRG Protein Powder says it can be used in muffins and pancakes but has no instructions on how to do this. I'm not skilled enough to know how to take a regular recipe and figure how to substitute some of this powder for, say, flour or something. Have any recipes?

Whooping crane chicks

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 12:44 AM
Operation Migration is an rehabitation project for whooping cranes, where they teach the chicks the migration route with ultralight planes.

Since it's spring, they've been getting eggs, meaning utterly adorable chicks are popping out.

Chick tocks are the cutest thing evar. Links to a few of my favorite pictures:

"Dog pack attacks gator in Florida"

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 12:09 AM
Long-time lurker, first-time poster...

A bit graphic, but shows the power of unity......
Dog Pack Attacks Gator in Florida
At times nature can be cruel, but there is also a raw beauty, and even a certain justice manifested within that cruelty.
The alligator, one of the oldest and ultimate predators, normally considered the 'apex predator,' can still fall victim to implemented 'team work' strategy, made possible due to the tight knit social structure and 'survival of the pack mentality' bred into canines.

See the remarkable photograph below courtesy of Nature Magazine. Note that the Alpha dog has a muzzle hold on the gator preventing it from breathing, while another dog has a hold on the tail to keep it from thrashing. The third d og attacks the soft underbelly of the gator.

Not for the squeamish! )

OMG, I have a horrible horrible love for piggies, wild boars, etc.. My father worked with pigs so ever since I was a little girl I couldn't get enough of seeing them, being around them, and petting them.

Post more if you have them!

Ok, I never posted this, but for the past week I've been on Weight Watchers. It's actually working out well for me, just writing out the food I eat. I've been eating healthier foods and excerising much more. I never really realized how much junk I was eating and how much of it I ate. Also, they want you to drink about 6 glasses of water a day, which actually keeps you fuller. The POINTS systems is based on calories, fiber, and fat. They want you to eat foods with more fiber, because fiber keeps you fuller, and with less fat. You can eat junk, but if that's the only thing you'll eat, good luck losing weight.

I had some trouble finding POINTS value Bennigan's because that's where the first party of the weekend is. That's just unfair. D: Their page should have the nutritional facts somewhere on the site. Someone like me needs to know the POINTS value so I know if I go over or not. I hate lacking sources.

Tell Tale Tails.

So.  Its April 5th.  I get home from work.  Like usual.  I was tired so I figured I'd take a nap before I did anything.  So Like usual.  I called my kitties and USUALLY they all come running in and at least say hi before darting off.  But, I called... Nothing.. I called again... Nothing.  I sit up,  and called again, was starting to get worried that something was wrong, and then Caliatious comes in, sits at the door way and yowls at me.  I talk back and she gets up walks over to the side of the bed yowls again and waits.  I call her up on the bed, she tries to jump but can't quite make it.  She tried again, gets up next to me and  I start petting her, and realize there is blood on her fur.. I of course am wondering what happened and about to freak out, and Cali looks at me, yowls one more time, jumps down stops and waits for me.  So I get up, she starts walking, stops and waits for me to catch up.  I get to her and she up and walks over to a cubby hole we have, and stops waits for me to get to where she is, and disappears into it.  I get a light and shine it into the cubby hole behind a few things that were there and see two itty bitty blobs of kitty!!!  As soon as she layed down made sure I wasn't leaving she popped out a third blob o kitty!  When I got up to go get my parents she got up yelled at me and waited for me to come back and wouldn't go see her kittens until I came with her.  SO I hollered at my parents to come down, and ever single time I tried to get up and go do something she would yell at me and drag me back to her and her kittens. How cute is that?

So Two days go by.  Its now April 7th.  I get home from work and I'm sitting upstairs for a few minutes talking with my mother.  And I hear Minja yelling.  I don't think anything of it, I go back to talking.  Again she yowls and then scratches the door.  So I go check on her.  I Open the door,  she stairs at me a few steps down,  Waits until I close the door behind me, walks a bit and waits for me to catch up.  I get to her and she climbs into a little cat bed hammock thing I have for them and I hear a little yew.  I look in and she has to blob o kittens!  I tried to get up and go get a box for her but she wouldn't let me leave without following and dragging me back.  So I get my parents down.  We get a box over to her and move the kittens into the clean box.  (where she was at was caked in cat hair... I mean CAKED in it. )  Well she gets into the box and has two more kittens.  Well Caliatious walks over wanting to know whats going on, she trys to climb into the box with Minja.  We pull her out take her back to her litter.   Well she comes running right back and gets over and back into the box and starts bathing Minja's kids, and then we see her jump out real fast, and try to make a run for her kids... only thing was... She was carrying one of Minja's Kittens to her spot!!!!

SO We have in total eight kittens.  We had nine, but one of Minja's did not make it :(.  We named him Halo before he died, because nothing should ever die without a name.

~~~~EDIT~~~~
And oh Yea.  All Eight of them have blue eyes.
